William Ernest Henley - A Thanksgiving

William Ernest Henley - A Thanksgiving

From brief delights that rise to me br Out of unfathomable dole, br I thank whatever gods there be br For mine unconquerable soul. br In the strong clutch of Circumstance br It has not winced, nor groaned aloud. br Before the blows of eyeless chance br My head is bloody, but unbowed. br I front unfeared the threat of space br And dwindle into dark again. br My work is done, I take my place br Among the years that wait for men. br My life, my broken life must be br One unsuccourable dole. br I thank the gods- they gave to me br A dauntless and defiant soul.
