Thus was my soul enfranchised. But anon, br With courage fired to full--fledged enterprise, br And pushing still the vantage I had won, br I sought communion with a world less wise, br The living world. I mixed with not a few, br Shepherds and countrymen, and village priests, br Bagmen at inns, and all the motley crew br Which comes and goes on market days and feasts br In old--world hostelries of old--world towns. br These gave a second schooling, till the grace br Of the summer ended on the upper downs, br And, carrying still its glory on my face, br I came to Lyons where these things befell.
