William Cowper - Love Abused

William Cowper - Love Abused

What is there in the vale of life br Half so delighted as a wife, br When friendship, love, and peace combine br To stamp the marriage bond divine? br The stream of pure and genuine love br Derive its current from above; br And earth a second Eden shows, br Where'er the healing water flows; br But ah, if from the dikes and drains br Of sensual Nature's feverish veins, br Lust, like a lawless headstrong flood, br Impregnated with ooze and mud, br Descending fast on every side br Once mingles with the sacred tide, br Farewell the soul-enlivening scene! br The banks that wore a smiling green, br With rank defilement overspread, br Bewail their flowery beauties dead; br The stream polluted, dark, and dull, br Diffused into a Stygian pool, br Through life's last melancholy years br Is fed with overflowing tears, br Complaints supply the zephyr's part, br And sighs that heave a breaking heart.
