William Cowper - Olney Hymn 40: Peace After A Storm

William Cowper - Olney Hymn 40: Peace After A Storm

When darkness long has veil'd my mind, br And smiling day once more appears, br Then, my Redeemer, then I find br The folly of my doubts and fears. br br Straight I upbraid my wandering heart, br And blush that I should ever be br Thus prone to act so base a part, br Or harbour one hard thought of Thee! br br Oh! let me then at length be taught br What I am still so slow to learn, br That God is love, and changes not, br Nor knows the shadow of a turn. br br Sweet truth, and easy to repeat! br But when my faith is sharply tried, br I find myself a learner yet, br Unskilful, weak, and apt to slide. br br But, O my Lord, one look from Thee br Subdues the disobedient will, br Drives doubt and discontent away, br And Thy rebellious worm is still. br br Thou art as ready to forgive br As I am ready to repine; br Thou, therefore, all the praise receive; br Be shame and self-abhorrence mine.
