William Cowper - Olney Hymn 59: A Living And A Dead Faith

William Cowper - Olney Hymn 59: A Living And A Dead Faith

The Lord receives his highest praise br From humble minds and hearts sincere; br While all the loud professor says br Offends the righteous Judge's ear. br br To walk as children of the day, br To mark the precepts' holy light, br To wage the warfare, watch, and pray, br Show who are pleasing in His sight. br br Not words alone it cost the Lord, br To purchase pardon for His own; br Nor will a soul by grace restored br Return the Saviour words alone. br br With golden bells, the priestly vest, br And rich pomegranates border'd round, br The need of holiness expressed, br And called for fruit as well as sound. br br Easy indeed it were to reach br A mansion in the courts above, br If swelling words and fluent speech br Might serve instead of faith and love.
