William Cowper - Watching Unto God In The Night Season

Sleep at last has fled these eyes, br Nor do I regret his flight, br More alert my spirits rise, br And my heart is free and light. br br Nature silent all around, br Not a single witness near; br God as soon as sought is found; br And the flame of love burns clear. br br Interruption, all day long, br Checks the current of my joys; br Creatures press me with a throng, br And perplex me with their noise. br br Undisturbed I muse all night, br On the first Eternal Fair; br Nothing there obstructs delight, br Love is renovated there. br br Life, with its perpetual stir, br Proves a foe to love and me; br Fresh entanglements occur-- br Comes the night, and sets me free. br br Never more, sweet sleep, suspend br My enjoyments, always new: br Leave me to possess my friend; br Other eyes and hearts subdue. br br Hush the world, that I may wake br To the taste of pure delights; br Oh the pleasures I partake-- br God, the partner of my nights! br br David, for the selfsame cause, br Night preferred to busy day; br Hearts whom heavenly beauty draws, br Wish the glaring sun away. br br Sleep, self–lovers, is for you-- br Souls that love celestial know br Fairer scenes by night can view br Than the sun could ever show.
