Dinah Maria Mulock Craik - In Memoriam

Obiit 1854. br br HEAVEN rest thee! br We shall go about today br In our festal garlands gay; br Whatsoever robes we wear br Not a trace of black be there. br Well, what matters? none is seen br On thy daisy covering green, br Or thy pure white pillow, hid br Underneath a cofin lid. br Heaven rest thee! br br Heaven take thee!-- br Ay, heaven only. Sleeps beneath br One who died a virgin death: br Died so slowly, day by day, br That it scarcely seemed decay, br Till this lonely churchyard kind br Opened,--and we left behind br Nothing but a little dust;-- br Heaven is pitiful and just: br Heaven take thee! br Heaven keep thee: br Nevermore above the ground br Be one relic of thee found: br Lay the turf so smooth, we crave, br None would guess it was a grave, br Save for grass that greener grows, br Or for wind that gentlier blows br All the earth o'er, from this spot br Where thou wert--and thou art not.
