Frances Darwin Cornford - Pre-Existence

Frances Darwin Cornford - Pre-Existence

I laid me down upon the shore br And dreamed a little space; br I heard the great waves break and roar; br The sun was on my face. br br My idle hands and fingers brown br Played with the pebbles grey; br The waves came up, the waves went down, br Most thundering and gay. br br The pebbles, they were smooth and round br And warm upon my hands, br Like little people I had found br Sitting among the sands. br br The grains of sands so shining-small br Soft through my fingers ran; br The sun shone down upon it all, br And so my dream began: br br How all of this had been before; br How ages far away br I lay on some forgotten shore br As here I lie to-day. br br The waves came shining up the sands, br As here to-day they shine; br And in my pre-pelasgian hands br The sand was warm and fine. br br I have forgotten whence I came, br Or what my home might be, br Or by what strange and savage name br I called that thundering sea. br br I only know the sun shone down br As still it shines to-day, br And in my fingers long and brown br The little pebbles lay.
