Thomas Lovell Beddoes - A Rivulet

Thomas Lovell Beddoes - A Rivulet

It is a lovely stream; its wavelets purl br As if they echoed to the fall and rise br Of the capricious breeze; each upward curl br That splashes pearl, mirrors the fairy eyes br Of viewless passer, and the billows hurl br Their sparkles on her lap, as over she flies. br And see, where onward whirls, within a ring br Of smoothest dimples, a dark foxglove bell br Half stifled by the gush encircling; br Perchance some tiny sprite crawled to that shell br To sleep away the noon, and winds did swing br Him into rest; for the warm sun was well br Shaded off by the long and silky down; br So I will save it, lest the elf should drown.
