Charlotte Smith - Sonnet LXXVIII. Snowdrops

Charlotte Smith - Sonnet LXXVIII. Snowdrops

WAN Heralds of the sun and summer gale! br That seem just fallen from infant Zephyrs' wing; br Not now, as once, with heart revived I hail br Your modest buds, that for the brow of Spring br Form the first simple garland--Now no more br Escaping for a moment all my cares, br Shall I, with pensive, silent, step explore br The woods yet leafless; where to chilling airs br Your green and pencil'd blossoms, trembling, wave. br Ah! ye soft, transient, children of the ground, br More fair was she on whose untimely grave br Flow my unceasing tears! Their varied round br The Seasons go; while I through all repine: br For fix'd regret, and hopeless grief are mine.
