Charlotte Smith - Sonnet L.

FROM THE NOVEL OF CELESTINA. br FAREWELL, ye lawns!--by fond remembrance blest, br As witnesses of gay unclouded hours; br Where, to maternal friendships' bosom prest, br My happy childhood past among your bowers. br Ye wood-walks wild!--where leaves and fairy flowers br By Spring's luxuriant hand are strewn anew; br Rocks!--whence with shadowy grace rude nature low'rs br O'er glens and haunted streams!--a long adieu! br And you!--O promised Happiness!--whose voice br Deluded Fancy heard in every grove, br Bidding this tender, trusting heart, rejoice br In the bright prospect of unfailing love: br Though lost to me--still may thy smile serene br Bless the dear lord of this regretted scene.
