Amy Lowell - Patience

Amy Lowell - Patience

Be patient with you? br When the stooping sky br Leans down upon the hills br And tenderly, as one who soothing stills br An anguish, gathers earth to lie br Embraced and girdled. Do the sun-filled men br Feel patience then? br br Be patient with you? br When the snow-girt earth br Cracks to let through a spurt br Of sudden green, and from the muddy dirt br A snowdrop leaps, how mark its worth br To eyes frost-hardened, and do weary men br Feel patience then? br br Be patient with you? br When pain's iron bars br Their rivets tighten, stern br To bend and break their victims; as they turn, br Hopeless, there stand the purple jars br Of night to spill oblivion. Do these men br Feel patience then? br br Be patient with you? br You! My sun and moon! br My basketful of flowers! br My money-bag of shining dreams! My hours, br Windless and still, of afternoon! br You are my world and I your citizen.
