Harriet Monroe - The River Kern

Harriet Monroe - The River Kern

While I walk the pavement sooty br In the town, br Tread the stony path of duty br Up and down, br Oh, the Kern, all clad in beauty— br Silver sheen br On blue and green— br Down his canon goes cascading, br Cavalcading, br Cannonading, br Seizing all the brooks and fountains br How they beat br Their crystal feet!— br Shouting to the haughty mountains, br Giant peaks that frown ! br br Oh, my heart runs with the river br Far away, br Though through wintry streets I shiver br Day by day! br Oh, I see the sunshine quiver— br Shafts of light br That pause in flight!— br While the Kern, with white feet prancing, br Downward dancing, br Gaily glancing, br Shakes the massive earth from under— br How he shocks br The solemn rocks!— br Shoves the mighty cliffs asunder, br Bids them guard his play! br br Now I hear the horns a-blowing br From the height, br And I see white garments flowing br Sheer and bright! br Down the hills the Kern is going— br Hear him call br His legions all! br Ye intrepid, oh come leaping! br Leave your sleeping br Swords from scabbards—hark, the clamor! br Swift and free br Oh would you be?— br In the glory, in the glamour, br Follow day and night !br br Harriet Monroebr br
