Thomas Parnell - Love In Disguise

Thomas Parnell - Love In Disguise

To stifle Passion is no easy Thing, br A Heart in Love is always on the Wing; br The bold Betrayer flutters still, br And fans the Breath prepar'd to tell: br It melts the Tongue, and tunes the Throat, br And moves the Lips to form the Note; br And when the Speech is lost, br It then sends out its Ghost, br A little Sigh, br To say we dye. br 'Tis strange the Air that Cools, a Flame shou'd prove, br But wonder not, it is the Air of Love. br Yet Chloris I can make my Love look well, br And cover bleeding Wounds I can't conceal, br My Words such artful Accents break, br You think I rather act than speak: br My Sighs enliven'd thro' a Smile, br Your unsuspecting Thoughts beguile; br My Eyes are vary'd so, br You can't their Wishes know: br And I'm so gay, br You think I play. br Happy Contrivance! such as can't be priz'd, br To Live in Love, and yet to Live disguis'd.
