Herman Melville - A Dirge For McPherson

Herman Melville - A Dirge For McPherson

Arms reversed and banners creped - br Muffled drums; br Snowy horses sable-draped - br McPherson comes. br br But, tell us, shall we know him more, br Lost-Mountain and lone Kenesaw? br br Brave the sword upon the pall - br A gleam in gloom; br So a bright name lighteth all br McPherson's doom. br br Bear him through the chapel-door - br Let priest in stole br Pace before the warrior br Who led. Bell -toll! br br Lay him down within the nave, br The lesson read - br Man is noble, man is brave, br But man's - a weed. br br Take him up again and wend br Graveward, nor weep: br There's a trumpet that shall rend br This Soldier's sleep. br br Pass the ropes the coffin round, br And let descend; br Prayer and volley - let it sound br McPherson's end. br br True fame is his, for life is o'er - br Sarpedon of the mighty war.
