Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - Ellen

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - Ellen

Sweet star, of seraph brightness, br That for a transient day br Shed o'er our souls such lightness, br And then withdrew the ray! br O, with immortal lustre br Thou 'rt sparkling brightly now br Amid the gems that cluster br Around Jehovah's brow! br br Yet many hearts are keeping br Lone vigils o'er thy grave, br Where all the hopes are sleeping br Which thy young promise gave. br The sleep which knows no waking br Hath closed thy sweet blue eyes, br And while our hearts are breaking br We glance toward the skies. br br Ah! there a hope is given br That bids us dry the tear; br That bright star in the heaven, br With beams so wondrous clear;-- br 'Tis Ellen's 'distant Aidenn,' br Far in the realms above, br And those clear rays are laden br With her pure spirit's love.
