Thomas Parnell - A Beavy Of The Fair & Gay

A Beavy of the fair & Gay, br Such as are daily Smoakt in tea, br & toasted over wine, br Vext to be made so long the Jeast br Of tongues & pens, to go in quest br Of reputation Joyn. br To K---d's house they first repair, br But scarce find any footsteps there, br to keep them off cold scent; br Long had she fled his slavery, br Her gallants stabbd him first, & she br Woud bury him in paint. br To O---y's they next advance, br But he was vanishd on a glance br to Make some conquest shott; br One who so many loves as she, br & one who loves fooles company, br Must love for you know what. br Of T---n newes in vain they sought, br Scarce M---ws covets to be thought br So ignorant in dressing; br For scandall had like Cr---fts appeard, br He urgd his suit, the God retird, br & left the Nymph unlacing. br No longer on your search remain, br For since your labour must be vain, br What need you make it long: br Believe me fairs, that every one br preserves him for her self alone, br Upon her proper tongue.
