Thomas Parnell - On Content

Grant heav'n that I may chuse my bliss br If you design me worldly Happiness br Tis not Honour thats but air br Glory has but fancied light br Fame as oft speak's false as right br Riches have wings & ever dwell with care br Give me an undistemperd mind br As ye third region undisturbd by wind br Content from passions ever free br to rule ones selfs indeed a monarchy br this I request of thee br br Tho all we see are fortunes apes br & change as oft as she their shapes br Tho my kinder fortune leave me br Tho my dearest friends deceive me br I in this universall tide br firm on heav'ns mercy would abide br & 'mongst ye giddy waves securely ride br Tho they should die br Who never did my love abuse br Perhaps in tears I would my passion vent br But straight again I'de be content br Remembring 'twas th' almighty's deed tho I br should my best relations loose br Ide sighing cry Heav'ns will be done br It did but lend them now it has its own. br Fortune should never be br Adored as a deity by me br She onely makes them fooles who make her great br But still content on earth intent on heav'n I'de be br an equall temper keep in ev'ry state br nor Care nor fear my destiny br Death when most dreadfull should not fright br Wn ere he comes Ide patiently submitt br Content thus in my soul should build its halcyons nest br As did thy spirit on ye waters rest br & keep an everlasting calm with in my breast.
