Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - I'm Tired Of Life

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - I'm Tired Of Life

I'm tired, I'm tired of life, brother! br Of all that meets my eye; br And my weary spirit fain would pass br To worlds beyond the sky. br For there is naught on earth, brother, br For which I'd wish to live; br Not all the glittering gauds of wealth br One hour of peace can give. br br I'm weary,--sick at heart, brother, br Of heartless pomp and show! br And ever comes some cloud to dim br The little joy I know. br This world is not the world, brother, br It seemed in days agone, br When I viewed it through the rainbow mists br Of childhood's rosy dawn. br br I would not pain your heart, brother-- br I know you love me well; br And that love is laid upon my soul, br E'en as a holy spell. br But I'm weary of this world, brother, br This world of sin and care; br And my spirit fluttereth to be free, br To mount the upper air! br br I know not of the world, brother, br To which I wish to go; br And perhaps my soul may there awake br To know a deeper woe! br They say the pure of earth, brother, br Find there undying bliss; br While all the wicked ones are cast br Into a dark abyss! br br I look upon the stars, brother, br That gem the vault of blue; br And when they tell me 'God is love,' br I feel it must be true; br For I see on all around, brother, br The impress of a hand br That blendeth and uniteth all br In one harmonious band. br br I am that which I am, brother, br As the Creator made; br To Him, all-holy and all-pure, br No fault can e'er be laid. br He knows my weakness well, brother, br And I can trust his love br To bear me safe through Jordan's stream br To brighter worlds above.
