Thomas Parnell - For Philip Ridgate Esq.

Thomas Parnell - For Philip Ridgate Esq.

To friend with fingers quick & limber, br I send this piece of tunefull timber: br that, as 'tis said in Orpheus story, br He may teach trees to dance a Bory; br Or else in modern Phrase more knavish, br He may the heart of broomstick ravish. br The man whose parts in Taverns shine, br Doates on the merry pipe of wine; br & he who late has got his pate full, br perceives the water pipe is gratefull; br But these are pipes that still are mute, br there is some musick in a flute. br Which since I as a present send, br the presents worth to recommend, br Ile in soft words its praises warble, br translated from Italian marble. br 'When ere we hear its strains & closes, br 'Enchanted reason sweetly dozes, br 'on laps of nymphs, & beds of roses; br 'the Soul that all its charms admires, br 'for lodgings in the ear enquires; br 'Gay pictures do the Fancy store; br '& passions felt but heard no more. br All that my author says is true, br When th' instrument is playd by you. br & least you think I came by this ill, br Splut her was preed her from a whistle.
