Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - Church Building

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper - Church Building

Uncle Jacob often told us, br Since freedom blessed our race br We ought all to come together br And build a meeting place. br br So we pinched, and scraped, and spared, br A little here and there: br Though our wages was but scanty, br The church did get a share. br br And, when the house was finished, br Uncle Jacob came to pray; br He was looking mighty feeble, br And his head was awful gray. br br But his voice rang like a trumpet; br His eyes looked bright and young; br And it seemed a mighty power br Was resting on his tongue. br br And he gave us all his blessing - br 'Twas parting words he said, br For soon we got the message br The dear old man was dead. br br But I believe he's in the kingdom, br For when we shook his hand br He said, 'Children, you must meet me br Right in the promised land; br br 'For when I done a moiling br And toiling here below, br Through the gate into the city br Straightway I hope to go.
