Thomas Parnell - On Divine Love By Meditating On The Wounds Of Christ

Holy Jesus! God of Love! br Look with pity from above, br Shed the precious purple tide br From thine hands, thy feet, thy side, br Let thy streams of comfort roll, br Let them please and fill my soul. br Let me thus for ever be br Full of gladness, full of thee, br This for which my wishes pine br Is the cup of love divine, br Sweet affections flow from hence, br Sweet above the joys of sense; br Blessed Philtre! how we find br Its sacred worships, how the mind br Of all the world forgetful grown, br Can despise an earthly throne, br Raise its thoughts to Realms above, br Think of God, and sing of love. br br Love Celestial, wond'rous heat br O beyond expression great! br What resistless charms were thine br In thy good thy best design! br When God was hated, Sin obey'd, br And man undone without thy aid. br From the seats of endless peace br They brought the son, the Lord of grace, br They taught him to receive a birth, br To cloath in flesh, to live on earth, br And after lifted him on high, br And taught him on the Cross to die. br br Love Celestial ardent fire, br O extreme of sweet desire! br Spread thy brightly raging flame br Thro' and over all my frame; br Let it warm me let it burn, br Let my corps to ashes turn, br And might thy flame thus act with me br To set the soul from body free, br I next wou'd use thy wings and fly br To meet my Jesus in the sky.
