Matthew Prior - Considerations - On Part Of The 88th Psalm. A College Exercise

Heavy, O Lord, on my thy judgements lie; br Accursed I am while God rejects my cry. br O'erwhelm'd in darkness and despair I groan, br And every place is hell, for God is gone. br O Lord, arise, and let thy beams control br Those horrid clouds that press my frighted soul: br Save the poor wanderer from eternal night, br Thou that art the God of light. br br Downward I hasten to my destined place; br There none obtain thy aid, or sing thy praise, br Soon shall I lie in death's deep ocean drown'd: br Is mercy there, or sweet forgiveness found? br O save me yet whilst on the brink I stand; br Rebuke the storm, and waft my soul to land, br O let her rest beneath thy wing secure, br Thou that art the God of power. br br Behold the prodigal! to thee I come, br To hail my father, and to seek my home. br Nor refuge could I find, nor friend abroad, br Straying in vice, and destitute of God. br O let thy terrors and my anguish end! br Be thou my refuge, and be thou my friend: br Receive the son thou didst so long reprove, br Thou that art the God of love.
