Ralph Hodgson - The House Across the Way

Ralph Hodgson - The House Across the Way

The leaves looked in at the window br Of the house across the way, br At a man that had sinned like you and me br And all poor human clay. br He muttered: 'In a gambol br I took my soul astray, br But to-morrow I'll drag it back from danger, br In the morning, come what may; br For no man knows what season br He shall go his ghostly way.' br And his face fell down upon the table, br And where it fell it lay. br And the wind blew under the carpet br And it said, or it seemed to say: br 'Truly, all men must go a-ghosting br And no man knows his day.' br And the leaves stared in at the window br Like the people at a play.
