Once perishing in blood I lay, br Creatures no help could give, br But Jesus passed me in the way, br He saw, and bid me live. br br Though Satan still his rule maintained, br And all his arts employed; br That mighty Word his rage restrained, br I could not be destroyed. br br At length the time of love arrived br When I my Lord should know, br Then Satan, of his pow'r deprived, br Was forced to let me go. br br O can I e'er that day forget br When Jesus kindly spoke! br Poor soul, my blood has paid thy debt, br And now I break thy yoke. br br Henceforth I take thee for my own, br And give myself to thee; br Forsake the idols thou hast known, br And yield thyself to me. br br Ah, worthless heart! it promised fair, br And said it would be thine; br I little thought it e'er would dare br Again with idols join. br br Lord, dost thou such backslidings heal, br And pardon all that's past? br Sure, if I am not made of steel, br Thou hast prevailed at last. br br My tongue, which rashly spoke before, br This mercy will restrain; br Surely I now shall boast no more, br Nor censure, nor complain.
