John Newton - Is This Thy Kindness To Thy Friend (Christ A Redeemer And Friend)

Poor, weak and worthless though I am br I have a rich almighty friend; br Jesus, the Saviour, is His Name; br He freely loves, and without end. br br He ransomed me from hell with blood, br And by His pow'r my foes controlled; br He found me wand'ring far from God, br And brought me to His chosen fold. br br He cheers my heart, my wants supplies, br And says that I shall shortly be, br Enthroned with Him above the skies; br O what a friend is Christ to me! br br But ah! I my inmost spirit mourns, br And well my eyes with tears may swim, br To think of my perverse returns; br I've been a faithless friend to him. br br Often my gracious Friend I grieve, br Neglect, distrust, and disobey, br And often Satan's lies believe, br Sooner than all my Friend can say. br br He bids me always freely come, br And promises whate'er I ask: br But I am straitened, cold and dumb, br And count my privilege a task. br br Before the world that hates his course, br My treach'rous heart has throbbed with shame; br Loth to forego the worlds applause, br I hardly dare avow his name. br br Sure were not I most vile and base, br I could not thus my friend requite! br And were not he the God of grace, br He'd frown and spurn me from his sight.
