John Newton - Manna Hoarded

John Newton - Manna Hoarded

The manna favored Israel's meat, br Was gathered day by day; br When all the host was served, the heat br Melted the rest away. br br In vain to hoard it up they tried, br Against tomorrow came; br It then bred worms and putrefied, br And proved their sin and shame. br br 'Twas daily bread and would not keep, br But must be still renewed; br Faith should not want a hoard or heap, br But trust the Lord for food. br br The truths by which the soul is fed, br Must thus be had afresh; br For notions resting in the head, br Will only feed the flesh. br br However true, they have no life, br Or unction to impart; br They breed the worms of pride and strife, br But cannot cheer the heart. br br Nor can the best experience past, br The life of faith maintain; br The brightest hope will faint at last, br Unless supplied again. br br Dear Lord, while we in prayer are found, br Do thou the Manna give; br O! let it fall on all around, br That we may eat and live.
