John Newton - The Heart Taken

John Newton - The Heart Taken

The castle of the human heart br Strong in its native sin; br Is guarded well, in every part, br By him who dwells within. br br For Satan there, in arms, resides, br And calls the place his own; br With care against assaults provides, br And rules, as on a throne. br br Each traitor thought on him, as chief, br In blind obedience waits; br And pride, self-will, and unbelief, br Are posted at the gates. br br Thus Satan for a season reigns, br And keeps his goods in peace; br The soul is pleased to wear his chains, br Nor wishes a release. br br But Jesus, stronger far than he, br In his appointed hour br Appears, to set his people free br From the usurper's pow'r. br br This heart I bought with blood, he says, br And now it shall be mine; br His voice the strong one armed dismays, br He knows he must resign. br br In spite of unbelief and pride, br And self, and Satan's art; br The gates of brass fly open wide, br And Jesus wins the heart. br br The rebel soul that once withstood br The Saviour's kindest call; br Rejoices now, by grace subdued, br To serve him with her all.
