John Newton - Satan Returning

John Newton - Satan Returning

When Jesus claims the sinner's heart, br Where Satan ruled before; br The evil spirit must depart, br And dares return no more. br br But when he goes without constraint, br And wanders from his home; br Although withdrawn, 'tis but a feint, br He means again to come. br br Some outward change perhaps is seen br If Satan quit the place; br But though the house seem swept and clean, br 'Tis destitute of grace. br br Except the Saviour dwell and reign br Within the sinner's mind; br Satan, when he returns again, br Will easy entrance find. br br With rage and malice sevenfold, br He then resumes his sway; br No more by checks to be controlled, br No more to go away. br br The sinner's former state was bad, br But worse the latter far; br He lives possessed, and blind, and mad, br And dies in dark despair. br br Lord save me from this dreadful end! br And from this heart of mine, br O drive and keep away the fiend br Who fears no voice but thine.
