John Newton - Zion, Or The City Of God

Glorious things of thee are spoken, br Zion, city of our God; br He whose word cannot be broken br Formed thee for His own abode. br On the Rock of Ages founded, br What can shake thy sure repose? br With salvation's walls surrounded br Thou may'st smile at all thy foes. br br See, the streams of living waters br Springing from eternal love br Well supply thy sons and daughters br And all fear of want remove. br Who can faint while such a river br Ever flows their thirst t'assuage br Grace, which, like the Lord, the Giver, br Never fails from age to age? br br Round each habitation hovering, br See the cloud and fire appear, br For a glory and a covering, br Showing that the Lord is near. br Thus they march, the pillar leading, br Light by night and shade by day, br Daily on the manna feeding br Which He gives them when they pray. br br Blest inhabitants of Zion, br Washed in the Redeemer's blood! br Jesus, whom their souls rely on, br Makes them kings and priests to God. br 'Tis His love His people raises br Over self to reign as kings, br And as priests, His solemn praises br Each for a thank-offering brings. br br Savior, if of Zion's city br I through grace a member am, br Let the world deride or pity, br I will glory in Thy name. br Fading is the worldling's pleasure, br All his boasted pomp and show; br Solid joys and lasting treasure br None but Zion's children know.
