Duncan Campbell Scott - Madonna With Two Angels

Duncan Campbell Scott - Madonna With Two Angels

Under the sky without a stain br The long, ripe, rippling of the grain; br Light, broadcast from the golden oats br Over the blackberry fences floats. br Madonna sits in a cedar chair br Tranquillized by the warm, still air; br One of the angels asleep on her knee br Under the shade of an apple tree. br The other angel holds a doll, br Covered warm in a tiny shawl; br The toy is supposed to be fast asleep br As the sister angel: in dimples deep br The grave, sweet charm on the baby face br Repeats the look of maturer grace br That hovers about Madonna's eyes, br One of the heavenly mysteries br From far ethereal latitudes br Where neither doubt nor trouble intrudes. br Ponder here in the orchard nest br On the truth of life made manifest: br The struggle and effort was all to prove br That the best of the world is home and love.
