Edith Nesbit - In Sanctuary

Edith Nesbit - In Sanctuary

THE young Spring air was strong like wine, br The sky reflected in your eyes br Was of a blue as deep-divine br As ever glowed in southern skies. br br br We passed from out the sunny lane br Into the green wood's shadowing; br And, sudden, all Love's words seemed vain br In that calm temple of the Spring. br br br Our god hears fair and tuneful words, br And splendid flowers his altars bear; br With choric song of leaves and birds, br Another god was worshipped there. br br br Silent, we passed the woodland, through br The coloured maze that Springtime weaves-- br The light leaves dancing to the blue, br The sunlight dancing to the leaves; br br br I could not speak.
