Duncan Campbell Scott - O Turn Once More

Duncan Campbell Scott - O Turn Once More

O turn once more! br The meadows where we mused and strayed together br Abound and glow yet with the ruby sorrel; br 'Twas there the bluebirds fought and played together, br Their quarrel was a flying bluebird-quarrel; br Their nest is firm still in the burnished cherry, br They will come back there some day and be merry; br O turn once more. br br O turn once more! br The spring we lingered at is ever steeping br The long, cool grasses where the violets hide, br Where you awoke the flower-heads from their sleeping br And plucked them, proud in their inviolate pride; br You left the roots, the roots will flower again, br O turn once more and pluck the flower again; br O turn once more. br br O turn once more! br We were the first to find the fairy places br Where the tall lady-slippers scarf'd and snooded, br Painted their lovely thoughts upon their faces, br And then, bewitched by their own beauty brooded; br This will recur in some enchanted fashion; br Time will repeat his miracles of passion; br O turn once more. br br O turn once more! br What heart is worth the longing for, the winning, br That is not moved by currents of surprise; br Who never breaks the silken thread in spinning, br Shows a bare spindle when the daylight dies; br The constant blood will yet flow full and tender; br The thread will mended be though gossamer-slender; br O turn once more.
