Edith Nesbit - Faith II

Edith Nesbit - Faith II

THROUGH the long night, the deathlong night, br Along the dark and haunted way, br I knew your hidden face was bright-- br More bright than any day. br br br And when the faint, insistent moan br Rose from some weed-grown wayside grave, br I said, 'I do not walk alone; br 'Tis easy to be brave. br br br I never turned to speak with you, br For all the way was dark and long, br But all the shadows' menace through br Your silence was my song. br br br I never sought to take your hand, br For all the way was long and rough; br I taught my soul to understand br That love was strength enough. br br br Then, suddenly, the ghosts drew near, br A ghastly, gliding, tomb-white band; br I called aloud for you to hear, br My hand besought your hand.
