Edith Nesbit - Inspiration

I WANDERED in the enchanted wood, br And as I wandered there, I sang br A song I never understood, br Though sweet the music rang. br br I held a lily white and fair, br Its perfume was a song divine, br A song like moonlight and clear air, br No rose-hued cloud like mine. br br Beneath pale moon and wind-winged skies br My lips were dumb as one drew near, br Folded warm wings across my eyes br And whispered in my ear. br br br He left a flame-flower in my hand, br And bade me sing as heretofore br The song I could not understand; br But I can sing no more. br br br His secret seals my dumb lips fast, br My lily withered 'neath his wing; br But now I understand at last br The song I used to sing.
