Edith Nesbit - Spring Song

Edith Nesbit - Spring Song

ALL winter through I sat alone, br Doors barred and windows shuttered fast, br And listened to the wind's faint moan, br And ghostly mutterings of the past; br And in the pauses of the rain, br 'Mid whispers of dead sorrow and sin, br Love tapped upon the window pane: br I had no heart to let him in. br br br But now, with spring, my doors stand wide; br My windows let delight creep through; br I hear the skylark sing outside; br I see the crocus, golden new. br The pigeons on my window-sill, br Winging and wooing, flirt and flout,-- br Now Love must enter if he will, br I have no heart to keep him out.
