Adelaide Crapsey - The Mourner

Adelaide Crapsey - The Mourner

I have no heart for noon-tide and the sun, br But I will take me where more tender night br Shakes, fold on fold, her dewy darkness down. br And shelters me that I may weep in peace, br And feel no pitying eyes, and hear no voice br Attempt my grief in comfort's alien tongue. br br Where cypresses, more black than night is black, br Border straight paths, or where, on hillside slopes, br The dim grglimmer of the olive trees br Lies like a breath, a ghost, upon the dark, br There will I wander when the nightingale br Ceases, and even the veil`ed stars withdraw br Their tremulous light, there find myself at rest, br br A silence and a shadow in the gloom. br But all the dead of all the world shall know br The pacing of my sable-sandall'd feet, br And know my tear-drenched veil along the grass, br And think them less forsaken in their graves, br br Saying: There's one remembers, one still mourns; br For the forgotten dead are dead indeed.
