Henry Alford - Life’s Answer

Henry Alford - Life’s Answer

I know not if the dark or bright br Shall be my lot: br If that wherein my hopes delight br Be best or not. br br It may be mine to drag for years br Toil's heavy chain: br Or day and night my meat be tears br On bed of pain. br br Dear faces may surround my hearth br With smiles and glee: br Or I may dwell alone, and mirth br Be strange to me. br br My bark is wafted to the strand br By breath divine: br And on the helm there rests a hand br Other than mine. br br One who has known in storms to sail br I have on board: br Above the raving of the gale br I hear my Lord. br br He holds me when the billows smite, br I shall not fall: br If sharp, 'tis short; if long, 'tis light; br He tempers all. br br Safe to the land--safe to the land, br The end is this: br And then with Him go hand in hand br Far into bliss.
