Ambrose Bierce - Geotheos

Ambrose Bierce - Geotheos

As sweet as the look of a lover br Saluting the eyes of a maid br That blossom to blue as the maid br Is ablush to the glances above her, br The sunshine is gilding the glade br And lifting the lark out of shade. br br br Sing therefore high praises, and therefore br Sing songs that are ancient as gold, br Of earth in her garments of gold; br Nor ask of their meaning, nor wherefore br They charm as of yore, for behold! br The Earth is as fair as of old. br br br Sing songs of the pride of the mountains, br And songs of the strength of the seas, br And the fountains that fall to the seas br From the hands of the hills, and the fountains br That shine in the temples of trees, br In valleys of roses and bees. br br br Sing songs that are dreamy and tender, br Of slender Arabian palms, br And shadows that circle the palms, br Where caravans out of the splendor, br Are kneeling in blossoms and balms, br In islands of infinite calms. br br br Barbaric, O Man, was thy runing br When mountains were stained as with wine br By the dawning of Time, and as wine br Were the seas, yet its echoes are crooning, br Achant in the gusty pine br And the pulse of the poet's line.
