Marjorie Lowry Christie Pickthall - Sleep

Marjorie Lowry Christie Pickthall - Sleep

HERE is a house, so great, so wide br It will take in the whole world's pride. br Yet, when I looked, it seemed I saw br Only a vast room strewn with straw br That was threshed of moony gleams br And dew of branches and star beams. br Here cheek by cheek the drowsed souls lay br Still as leverets in the hay. br Merry it was to see in Sleep br How each soul had found his brother; br Here a king and there a sweep br Lay hand-fast and kissed each other, br There a queen that had been sad br Mothered in Sleep a shepherd lad, br And lovers saw the loved one's face br Star-like in a lonely place. br But the Lamp that gave them light br Was lovelier than the dreams of night. br Angels watched lest any steal it,– br Christ's own heart, laid here to heal it.
