Christopher Morley - The Intruder

Christopher Morley - The Intruder

AS I sat, to sift my dreaming br To the meet and needed word, br Came a merry Interruption br With insistence to be heard. br br Smiling stood a maid beside me, br Half alluring and half shy; br Soft the white hint of her bosom- br Escapade was in her eye. br br 'I must not be so invaded,' br (IN anger then I cried)- br 'Can't you see that I am busy? br Tempting creature, stay outside! br br 'Pearly rascal, I am writing: br I am now composing verse- br Fie on antic invitation: br Wanton, vanish-fly-disperse! br br 'Baggage, in my godlike moment br What have I to do with thee?' br And she laughed as she departed- br 'I am Poetry,' said she.
