Padraic Colum - Before The Fair

Padraic Colum - Before The Fair

'Lost,' 'lost,' the beeves and the bullocks, br The cattle men sell and buy, br Crowded upon the fair green, br Low to the lightless sky. br br 'Live,' 'live,' and 'Here,' 'here,' the blackbird br From the top of the bare ash-tree, br Over the acres whistles br With beak of yellow blee. br br And climbing, turning, and climbing br His little stair of sound, br 'Content,' 'content,' from the low hedge br The redbreast sings in a round. br br And I who hear that hedge-song br Will fare with all the rest, br With thoughts of lust and labour, br And bargain in my breast.
