Padraic Colum - A Saint

Padraic Colum - A Saint

THE stir of children with fresh dresses on, br And men who meet and say unguarded words, br And women from the coops br Of drudgeries released; br br And standing at their doors to watch go by br Small pomps with pennons and with first spring-flowers, br And, lifted over them, br Your name that sanctifies. br br But you, when you came here, it was to front br Hard-handed men, and trouble them for dues br To stay the fatherless br Portion of what they ploughed. br br To claim resource from them whose own resource br Was pittance this you came here to do, br And give for what you gained br Your season of bright youth: br br The hunt upon the mountain-side, the dance br Down in the vale; the whisper at the door; br Kiss on unstaying lips br That afterwards would stay; br br Music you could have made would make our land br Of noble note and join our different breeds, br And make your name endeared br On roadside and in hall. br br All this was changed, as when the warm stream br Setting through ocean toward vine-bearing isles, br Turns its flow toward capes br Where heather only thrives. br br That day that was of battles and hard pledges br Has all been changed into this whitened morn- br Music and holiday, br And benediction bells.
