Henry King - The Farewell

Henry King - The Farewell

Splendidis longum valedico nugis. br br Farewell fond Love, under whose childish whip, br I have serv'd out a weary Prentiship; br Thou that hast made me thy scorn'd property, br To dote on Rocks, but yielding Loves to fly: br Go bane of my dear quiet and content, br Now practise on some other Patient. br Farewell false Hope that fann'd my warm desire br Till it had rais'd a wild unruly fire, br Which nor sighs cool, nor tears extinguish can, br Although my eyes out-flow'd the Ocean: br Forth of my thoughts for ever, Thing of Air, br Begun in errour, finish't in despair. br Farewell vain World, upon whose restless stage br Twixt Love and Hope I have foold out my age; br Henceforth ere sue to thee for my redress, br Ile wooe the wind, or court the wilderness; br And buried from the dayes discovery, br Study a slow yet certain way to dy. br My woful Monument shall be a Cell, br The murmur of the purling brook my knell; br My lasting Epitaph the Rock shall grone: br Thus when sad Lovers ask the weeping stone, br What wretched thing does in that Center lie? br The hollow Eccho will reply, 'twas I.
