Ellis Parker Butler - Jabed Meeker, Humorist

Twain? Oh, yes, I’ve heard Mark Twain br Heard him down to Pleasant Plain; br Funny? Yes, I guess so. Folks br Seemed to laugh loud at his jokes— br Laughed to beat the band; but I br Couldn’t rightly make out why. br Guess his humor ain’t refined. br Quite enough to suit my mind. br Mark’s all right—right clever speaker— br But he can’t touch Jabed Meeker; br And one thing that makes it queer br Is that Jabed lives right here. br br You ain’t met him? Son, you’ve missed br The most funniest humorist br I’ve met with in my born days— br Funniest talker, anyways, br When it comes to repartee— br That’s the humor catches me! br br Like a specimen? Huh! Well, br Take, for instance, his umbrell; br Wouldn’t think, until he spoke, br He could turn that to a joke; br Mark Twain couldn’t, bet you that! br That’s where Meeker beats Mark flat! br br Just imagine three or four br Fellers in Jim Beemer’s store— br ‘Long comes Meeker, and some feller br Says, 'See Meeker’s bum umbreller.
