Mathilde Blind - Spring In The Alps

Mathilde Blind - Spring In The Alps

THE flowers are at their Bacchanals br Among the lusty green; br Wild Orchis and Narcissus waltz br With Marguerite for queen. br Birds join in glees and madrigals br To little loves unseen; br And unimprisoned Waterfalls br Flash laughing in between. br br The Sunlight, leaping from the Heights, br Flames o'er the fields of May, br Winged with unnumbered swallow-flights br Fresh from the long sea way; br br And butterflies and insect mites, br Born with the new-blown day, br Cross fires in shifting opal lights br From spray to beckoning spray. br br The dandelion puffs her balls, br Free spinsters of the air, br Who scorn to wait for beetle calls br Or bees to find them fair; br But breaking through the painted walls br Their sisters tamely bear, br Fly off in dancing down, which falls br And sprouts up everywhere. br br And far above Earth's flower-filled lap br And rosy revelry, br The mountain mothers feed her sap br From herded clouds on high-- br Each pinnacle and frozen pap br Whose life has long gone by, br A bridge which spans the mighty gap br Between the earth and sky. br St. Gotthardt.
