Ellis Parker Butler - Outbid

Ellis Parker Butler - Outbid

When Cupid held an auction sale, br I hastened to his mart, br For I had heard that he would sell br The blue-eyed Dora’s heart. br br I brought a wealth of truest love, br The most that I could proffer, br Because, forsooth, of stocks or bonds br I had not one to offer. br br When Cupid offered Dora’s heart, br I bid my whole heart’s love, br A love that reached from sea to sea br And to the sky above; br br And When Sir Cupid called for more, br I bid my hands and life, br That should be hers for servitude br If she became my wife. br br Then 'Going! going!' Cupid cried; br The silence was intense br Until old Goldbags said, 'I bid br My stocks and four per cents!' br br Then Cupid cried, 'Fair Dora’s heart, br That ne’er was sold before! br Does anybody raise the bid? br Will any offer more?' br br 'If not—,' but Count Decrepit rose, br Infirm, decayed and slim; br 'I hid my title!' and her heart br Was there knocked down to him.
