Joseph Furphy - Autograph Verses

'Prove what Life can give of gladness; br Seek for aught that merits trust — br All thy mirth will turn to sadness, br All thy bliss to cold disgust. br Soon revolving years will banish br Fairest hopes, in darkness laid; br Earthly treasures soon must vanish, br Strength and beauty fail and fade.' br br Thus, life-weary, spake the preacher, br Closing his misguided quest. br Heed him not, the half-truth teacher, br Deaf to Love's supreme behest. br But with Faith thy life adorning, br Serve thy race as Heaven hath plann'd; br Sow thy seed at dawn of morning, br Nor at evening stay thy hand. br Never shall this path seem weary; br Never hath such purpose fail'd; br Nor the retrospect proved dreary, br When Life's furthest heights are scaled. br And in bright realms still above thee, br On some ever-verdant shore, br Those thou servest, and who love thee, br Shall rejoin, to part no more.
