Ellis Parker Butler - Cupid Caught Napping

Cupid on a summer day, br Wearied by unceasing play, br In a rose heart sleeping lay, br While, to guard the tricksy fellow, br Close above the fragrant bed br Back and forth a gruff bee sped, br And, to lull the sleepy head, br Played 'Zoom! Zoom!' upon his ‘cello. br br Little did the god surmise br That sweet Anna’s cerule eyes br Gazed on him with glad surprise, br Or that he was in such danger; br But the watchman bee, in haste, br Left his post that he might taste br of the honey nature placed br On the lips of that fair stranger.
