Mathilde Blind - Invocation

Mathilde Blind - Invocation

JUNE, 1866. br br BREATHE thro' me in music, br Spirit of the time! br Pregnant with the future, br Spirit of the time! br br As the west wind sougheth, br Through the swaying pine, br Sweep tho' all my branches br With thy song divine. br br Nations now are rolling br Onward, as the sea br Which the moon upheaveth, br Thus upheaved by thee. br br Muffled mutt'ring groweth br Louder on the air! br Like a lion roaring, br Rising from his lair. br br As the anthem surgeth br Through cathedral aisles, br Swells the voice of nations br Over miles of miles. br br As the thunder growleth br In yon cloud afar, br In their bosoms broodeth br The black bolt of war. br br Snap in twain your fetters, br Cleave your ancient yoke, br Burst the gloom of ages br With the lightning stroke. br br Clap on clap, down-crashing, br Clatter crowd on crowd, br From Venetia's dungeons, br From the Roman shroud; br br From the graves of Poland, br From Germania's plains, br From the death-pollution br Of imperial chains. br br Feel yourselves as brothers, br Dare to think ye free; br And in dust will shiver br Thrones of tyranny. br br Like night's phantoms, with'ring br 'Neath the glance of dawn, br Kings and priests dissolveth br Your full-flashing frown. br br Forward, sons of morning, br With a sacred ire! br Lead ye, like Jehovah, br In a pillar of fire. br br Through the dreary desert, br Through the burning sand br Till, on shores of promise br And of peace, ye land. br br Where a purer people, br Led by laws innate, br Shall, towards the heavens, br Tower in grander state. br br Breathe and blow in music; br On, from clime to clime; br Baptize, with the Holy Spirit br Spirit of the time.
